STELLENBOSCH, South Africa — Capitec Bank, South Africa's largest retail bank by customer numbers, reported headline earnings of R9.5 billion for the six months ended Aug. 31, 2026, a 19% increase over the same period a year earlier. The bank attributed the gain in part to continued growth in digital adoption, with active banking app users rising 18% to 16.5 million.

Capitec has built its retail banking model around low-cost, app-first banking relative to South Africa's traditional "big four" banks, and the growth in app users is one of the metrics the bank points to as evidence that strategy continues to gain share. The bank did not break out what portion of the earnings increase is directly attributable to digital channel growth versus other factors such as lending volume or net interest margin.

The results arrive alongside a broader wave of earnings reports from South African banks this reporting season, including Nedbank's R8.4 billion in headline earnings, which the bank linked to its automation strategy and recent acquisitions of iKhokha and NCBA. Capitec has not disclosed forward guidance for the back half of its financial year.
